Introduction

Being a medical student isn’t just about medicine. You are your own person. You are entitled to have passions and interests outside of medicine. But, how to motivate and manage time to enable you to go beyond medicine and become the best version of yourself? Well, keep reading to find out how you can.

My story is about how I’ve managed to do a University level sport whilst keeping on top of medicine. I am a final year medical student and have been part of the University Powerlifting Club for 3 years. I started off as a beginner but quickly began competing for the University and then at national level competitions (placing 3rd in the country in my last competition). Despite going into final year with exams soon approaching, I am now dedicating even more time to the club as an executive member of the committee this year. I love what I do but always get asked how I manage to find time. I train 4 times a week (2.5 hours each session), spend time meal prepping, stretch every day, help out at weekly team training sessions, and still make sure I get my 8 hours of sleep every night (for recovery!). When I think about it like that, powerlifting does take up a significant proportion of my time! So how do I still have time for medicine?
