Physiology

Physiology is the “normal” functioning of the human body. It’s what enables us to appreciate the anatomy of our body, understand disease and understand why the treatments used actually work. So, it’s pretty fundamental. At times we have to tackle some tricky concepts, requiring some good explanations. These are the resources that have helped me throughout. General Physiology

Medical Physiology Boron and Boulpaep is ideal to use as the “general physiology book”. It covers all the body systems in an easy to follow, clear and comprehensive manner. It’s especially good for learning about the heart, renal and circulatory systems.

If you’re like me and don’t really fancy textbooks. Then Osmosis have several videos that integrate anatomy and physiology to give a good overview of key concepts. These videos are ideal to get a “big picture” idea, instead of getting too bogged down on the detail.

I’d recommend using lecture notes to start with, then looking up specific tricky concepts in general textbooks, then watching an Osmosis video on the relevant topic to finally put everything together.

Other good general books are Human Physiology: The Basis of Medicine by Pocock and Richards and Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology. Another good place for clear videos about physiology is the You Tube channel by Armando Hasudungan.

Respiratory

Medical Physiology: Principles for Clinical Medicine is very good for learning about the respiratory system in detail. It provides quite in-depth knowledge for those interested.

Nerve and Muscle

Nerve and Muscle, Fourth Edition is pretty good for learning about the nervous system and muscle physiology. This is good for extra detail about concepts only covered briefly in the general textbooks.

Endocrinology

Essential Endocrinology and Diabetes is ideal for learning in depth about the endocrine system.
